Starting your own Business – the Reality Edition

Starting your own business takes balls. Great big ones.

A few weeks ago I was talking with a friend who recently started her own business. About how all consuming it was. That in the beginning it is so hard to juggle it all – workload, marketing, family, friendships, relationships. Odds are you will fail at at least one of those…sometimes you fail at them all.

I don’t think people understand that…that it needs to consume you for a while or you won’t make it. The whole “if you love what you do you will never work a day in your life” quote? ummmmm…..

Bullshit.

Some days your creativity has disappeared, some days your developer won’t get back to you and you feel like your head may explode, some days your cash flow is unpredictable.

Quoting is work.

Invoicing is work.

Maintenance on sites is work.

Chasing after money is work.

Business is work.

Let’s not sugar coat it. There is a ton of awesome about owning your own business, just go in with your eyes wide open. When you feel like WOO HOO no more working for the man I’m the boss…remember you just signed up to have the “boss” on your ass 24/7 rather than 8 hours a day 😉

Lol yup…you summed it up! But isn’t it a blast?!?! I wouldn’t have it any other way. Owning your own small business is not for the faint of heart. It also helps to keep things in perspective — keep a broad view of the big picture because if you obsess over every challenge the road will be even more bumpy! Anyway, anything worth doing should be challenging!
