Now watch the visitors and clients come rolling in! Slow down. Launching a site does not automatically generate traffic. Yesterday you were not on the internet, and today you are but there is no notification that goes out to all your potential customers announcing your arrival. As wonderful as that would be, that is just not how it works. You need to tell people you are out there. Repeatedly. And that telling is where your website launch strategies come in. ## Website launch strategies that actually work ### Tell every platform you are on Update every social profile you have with a link to your new site. Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn — everywhere. Then announce it. Not once, not twice, but on the regular. Different posts, different angles, different pages of the site. Keep reminding people it exists. And while you are at it, if you have worked with us on your site, drop the www. It is not 2003 anymore. Your domain does not need those three letters in front of it. Share unlimitedbs.ca, not www.unlimitedbs.ca. It looks cleaner, it is easier to remember, and frankly it just looks more current. ### Feature different pages over time Your homepage is not your only content. Spread your launch momentum across several weeks by spotlighting different pages: your About page, a specific service, a blog post. Each one is an opportunity to send people somewhere specific and give them a reason to explore. ### Ask people to share it This costs nothing and works surprisingly well. Ask your network to share your site. Your clients, your colleagues, your connections. Word of mouth online is still word of mouth. [Repurposing your website content](/website-marketing-tips/) for social posts, short videos, or polls is also one of the easiest ways to keep the launch momentum going long after the initial announcement. ### Update everywhere else too Your email signature. Your Google Business profile. Your LinkedIn. Your Etsy, your Eventbrite, your forum profiles, wherever you exist online. Every place your name shows up is an opportunity to point someone back to your site. ## The mindset shift that makes it all work Your website is not a finish line. It is a starting point. A living, working part of your marketing that needs to be actively promoted, updated, and used if it is going to do its job. [The businesses that get the most out of their websites](/website-marketing-tips/) are the ones that treat them that way, not as something they built once and checked off the list, but as a tool they keep using. The one" last_modified: "2026-04-23T15:29:20+00:00" categories: [Random BS] --- # What redesigning an entire website taught me I never used to ask my clients the right questions. When I started this business, my biggest learning experience and the one that hit me straight in the gut, was having to redesign an entire site from scratch. The one and only time it happened but it really had an impact. It made me feel like a failure, question myself, and had me wondering how I could even call myself a web designer. But I did it. I rebuilt the whole thing, top to bottom. And I learned two lessons that have shaped every project since. ## Lesson one: be confident in your why Know why you made the decisions you made, and say it out loud. At the time I was brand new and genuinely nervous. I knew why I had designed the layout the way I did. I understood the logic. But I was not confident enough to explain it to the client. So when they pushed back, I had nothing to offer. No explanation. No rationale. Just silence. We could have met in the middle. We probably would have, if I had spoken up. Instead, I said nothing, they were unhappy, and the whole thing had to be done again. The lesson you could take from this whether you are a business owner or a service provider is the same. If you believe in your approach, explain it. Not defensively, not arrogantly, but clearly. Educate the people you work with about your process. Show them why your decisions are in their best interest. That conversation is the difference between a successful project and a frustrating one. ### What this looks like in our process now When I build a site, I explain my decisions. Why the navigation is structured a certain way. Why certain content lives where it does. Why a specific layout choice serves the user better than the alternative. Clients who understand the why are more confident in the outcome. And they are better at giving useful feedback. ## Lesson two: ask the right questions upfront Not every client is the right fit. Not every product or service is the right solution for every person who walks in the door. The kindest thing you can do for yourself and for them, is figure that out before the project begins. Ask the questions that tell you whether what you do actually solves their problem. Will it make their life easier? Save them time? Save them money? Does it fit their audience, their budget, their goals? ### My mistake In that project, I did not pay enough attention to who the client’s audience actually was. It was a site for primarily older adults, and I designed it like it was for 25-year-old outdoor enthusiasts. The whole site was aimed at the wrong people. I was so excited about the project and so caught up in the creative that I designed for what I wanted, not for who was actually going to use it. The moment I saw the finished product, I knew I had missed the mark entirely. It was my fault, and I owned it. ## The redemption part The same clients came back a few years later for a new site. And that one was a success for both of us. They are still my clients to this day, one of the OGs. I tell this story a lot, in project meetings and in conversations with other designers, because it is a good reminder that the mistakes that sting the most are also the ones that teach you the most. And because any client who gives you a second chance deserves to have you show up differently. Spend the time educating your clients on what you do, and why, through your website, your marketing, your conversations. And trust yourself. This post is the quick reference version, use it as a web accessibility checklist you can actually run through and measure your site against. ## Content and language **1. Your headings actually mean something.** Headings are not just for making text look bigger. They create a logical structure that screen readers use to help users navigate the page. H1 for your title, H2 for main sections, H3 for sub-points. In order. Every time. **2. You’re writing for humans, not robots.** Clear, plain language. No unexplained acronyms. No jargon that assumes the reader already knows what you know. If your grandmother and your most technical client can both understand it, you’re on the right track. **3. Your link text is actually descriptive.** If someone read only your links out loud, would they make sense? “Click here” and “read more” tell nobody anything. “Learn more about our web design process” tells them exactly where they are going. [We covered this one in detail here.](/accessible-website-content/) **4. Every page has a descriptive title.** Your browser tab should tell someone what page they are on, not just your business name repeated on every single page. **5. There is a way to contact you on every page.** Do not make people hunt for a way to reach you. A link to your contact page in your navigation, your footer, or both. Every page. Done. ## Images and media **6. Every image has an alt tag.** Screen readers read alt text to describe images to users who cannot see them. Search engines read them too. No alt tag means the image is invisible to both. This one is non-negotiable. **7. Your videos have captions.** If your video communicates something — a message, a story, information — it needs captions. Not everyone can hear it, and a surprising number of people watch with the sound off anyway. [More on when captions are required here.](/web-accessibility-design/) **8. Videos with complex visual content have audio descriptions.** If something important is happening on screen that is not explained in the audio, users who are blind or have low vision will miss it entirely. Audio descriptions fill that gap. ## Design and visuals **9. Your colour contrast passes the test.** Dark text on a light background, or light on dark. Avoid colours that blend into each other. Use a free contrast checker to verify — [WebAIM’s tool](https://webaim.org/resources/contrastchecker/) takes thirty seconds. [More on colour contrast here.](/web-accessibility-design/) **10. Your design is clean and uncluttered.** White space is not wasted space. A clean, clear layout is easier for everyone to navigate, especially users with cognitive or attention challenges. Less is genuinely more. **11. Text size can be adjusted.** Users should be able to increase the font size in their browser without your layout breaking. If your site falls apart when someone bumps up the text, that is a design problem. ## Navigation and structure **12. Your navigation is logical and consistent.** Menus should behave the same way across every page. Visitors should never have to figure out how to find things, it should be obvious. **13. There’s a sitemap.** A sitemap helps search engines find everything on your site and gives users an overview of your content structure. It should exist. It should be current. **14. There is a search function.** Especially important on larger sites. If someone cannot find what they need through your navigation, search is the backup that keeps them on your site instead of bouncing. **15. Users can skip past repeating elements.** Navigation menus repeat on every page. For keyboard users and screen reader users who have to tab through every link to get to the actual content, a “skip to main content” link at the top of the page is a small addition that makes a significant difference. ## Technical foundations **16. Your site works on a keyboard alone.** Put your mouse down and try navigating your site using only the Tab key. Can you get everywhere? Can you see where you are at any point? If not, [your keyboard focus needs attention.](/web-accessibility-design/) **17. Your site works with screen readers and assistive technology.** This one ties into your semantic HTML structure. Using heading tags, list tags, and other HTML elements the way they are intended to be used so assistive technology can interpret the page correctly. **18. Your site is responsive.** It should work on a phone, a tablet, a desktop, and a large monitor without breaking. In 2026, this should be obvious but it’s still worth confirming. **19. Your HTML is clean and semantic.** Properly structured HTML5 code is the foundation everything else is built on. It is what allows browsers, search engines, and assistive technologies to all interpret your site correctly. **20. You actually test for accessibility.** Tools like [WAVE by WebAIM](https://wave.webaim.org/) let you run a free automated accessibility scan on any page. It will not catch everything, but it will catch a lot and it’s a good place to start. How did your site do? If you are counting gaps and not loving the number, [let’s talk about what it would take to close them.](/web-accessibility/) [Contact us if you still have questions](https://unlimitedbs.ca/contact/) --- --- title: "Website marketing tips: how to make your site work for you 24/7" url: "https://unlimitedbs.ca/website-marketing-tips/" lang: "en-US" type: "post" description: "As the saying goes, \"Websites promote you 24/7: no employee will do that.\" And it's true. Your website is one of the best investments you can make for your business precisely because it never clocks out, never calls in sick, and never asks for a raise. But only if you actually put it to work. Here are some website marketing tips to make sure your site is pulling its weight around the clock and a few things to clean up when it is not. ## Website marketing tips to get more out of what you have You do not always need a redesign. Sometimes you just need to use what is already there more intentionally. ### Promote your site like you mean it A website does not market itself. When you launch, or relaunch, make some noise about it. Make sure all your social profiles are linked and up to date. Announce the site on every platform you are on. Ask your network to share it. Then keep the momentum going by featuring different pages over several weeks rather than one big push and silence. Your About page, a specific service, a blog post, each of those can be its own social moment. You also have more content than you think. A page on your site can become a social post, a short video, a poll. Repurposing your content is one of the best website marketing tips we can offer when you are not sure what to post next. The words are already written. Just use them differently. ### Marie Kondo your content Does your content spark joy? More importantly, does it work? Organizing and streamlining website content is one of our favourite things to do. Taking large amounts of information and making it easy for visitors to actually consume it is where a lot of sites fall short. Here is what a good content cleanup looks like: - Update copy that is out of date or no longer accurate - Streamline your navigation so visitors can find things without a treasure map - Set up redirects for any pages you remove or rename (this is important for SEO) - Condense material that is repetitive or overwhelming - Clean up old accounts and integrations you are no longer using, you might even save some money The goal is a smooth, logical experience from the moment someone lands on your site to the moment they reach out. If there are friction points along the way, people leave. ## Your website is a living thing — treat it that way Getting a website is not your final step. It is the start! A living, evolving marketing tool that should always reflect your current offers, your current brand, and who you are currently the right fit for. [Knowing your target audience](/website-target-audience/) makes every one of these website marketing tips land harder, because you’re not just creating content, you’re creating content for someone specific. That specificity is what turns a casual visitor into an actual lead. For a broader look at content marketing strategy, [HubSpot’s marketing resources](https://www.hubspot.com/resources) are worth bookmarking. **Want help organizing what you have got and making it work harder?** [Reach out here, we’re ready to help](https://unlimitedbs.ca/contact/) --- --- title: "User-friendly website design" url: "https://unlimitedbs.ca/user-friendly-website-design/" lang: "en-US" type: "post" description: "How self check-outs get it wrong You go in for one thing. Is this your" last_modified: "2026-04-23T15:24:04+00:00" categories: [Design] --- # User-friendly website design ## How self check-outs get it wrong You go in for one thing. You scan it. Then: would you like to donate to our community fund? How do you want your receipt? Do you have a loyalty card? Is this your first time here? Have you heard about our app? Please place your item in the bagging area, followed by UNEXPECTED ITEM IN THE BAGGING AREA. By the time you leave, you have answered approximately 3,242 questions, involved a staff member at least once, and questioned every decision that led you to this moment. The user was never top of mind. The machine was designed for the business. And that is the fastest way to make someone never want to come back. Your website can do the same thing. ## User-friendly website design puts the visitor first This sounds obvious, but it’s not always practiced. A user-friendly website design asks: what does this person need, and how quickly can we get them there? Not: how many things can we ask them before they leave? Not: how much can we fit on this page? Not: how do we make sure they see our promotion before they see the thing they came for? Every extra step, every unnecessary pop-up, every form that asks for more information than it needs, every page that takes too long to load — are self-checkout moments. Small friction points that individually feel minor and collectively make someone give up and go somewhere else. ### The question to ask about every element on your page Does this serve the visitor, or does it serve us? If the honest answer is the latter, it might be time to rethink it. ## Clean design is user-friendly design One of the most underrated principles of user-friendly website design is also one of the simplest: leave space. A cluttered, overwhelming page is hard for everyone to navigate and harder still for users with cognitive disabilities, attention challenges, or sensory sensitivities. Plenty of white space, a clear visual hierarchy, and an uncluttered layout make it easier for every visitor to find what they are looking for without feeling like they accidentally walked into a Times Square billboard. Clean design is not minimalism for the sake of aesthetics. It is a communication choice that says: we thought about how you would use this. We did not just pile everything in and hope for the best. ## Design for the connection they are actually on Here is one situation not often considered. Not everyone is loading your website on a fast fibre connection in a well-lit home office. Some of your visitors are on shaky mobile data in a rural area. Some are in a building with terrible wifi. Some are on older devices that chug through heavy pages like dial-up modems from the early 2000s, and if you remember that sound, you know exactly the kind of patience we are talking about. User-friendly website design accounts for the real world, not the ideal one. That means optimizing images so they are not massive files, limiting scripts that slow down load times, and building pages that do not require a perfect internet connection to be usable. It is also an accessibility issue. Slow connections disproportionately affect people in lower-income areas, rural communities, and regions with limited infrastructure. Designing for their experience is both the smart and the right thing to do. ## The simple version of all of this Get out of your visitor’s way! Make it easy to find what they came for. Do not make them answer 3,242 questions to get there. Looks get someone interested, sure. But what they can’t see on the screen is what decides whether they stay, find what they need, and come back. WordPress SEO basics are a big part of that, and they are also the part of web design nobody notices until it is missing. I talk about this a lot when I present to students at [Red Deer Polytechnic](https://rdpolytech.ca/). Designers get excited about fonts and colour palettes. The invisible stuff? Not so glamorous. But it’s doing more work for your site than the homepage hero image ever will. ## What “invisible” actually means When you land on a site, you see the colours, the photos, the headlines. Underneath that, a good WordPress build also includes a whole layer of technical work that never shows up on screen. ### The WordPress SEO basics every site needs: - Page names and URLs written for people and for search engines - Meta tags that tell search results what a page is actually about - Alt tags on every image, because screen readers and Google both read them - A sitemap that helps search engines find everything - Image optimizing that keeps pages fast instead of heavy - Social sharing images set up so your links look right when posted - An SSL certificate so the browser trusts your site - Site speed tuned so visitors do not leave before the first click None of this shows up in a screenshot. All of it shows up in how your site performs. ## Why WordPress SEO basics matter for trust and traffic Search engines are trying to send people to sites that actually work. A slow site, or one without proper meta and alt text, tells Google it does not have to rank you. A site without SSL tells browsers to flag you as not secure. These are not extras to add later. They are the difference between a site that earns traffic and one that sits there. The same details also affect how your visitors feel. A site that loads in two seconds reads as professional. One that takes eight reads as neglected, even if the design is beautiful. You can check how your own site is performing right now using [Google PageSpeed Insights](https://pagespeed.web.dev/), which gives you a free snapshot of where things stand. ### Accessibility is part of the picture too Alt tags on images are not just good for SEO. They are how screen readers describe images to users with visual impairments. A well-built site serves everyone, and that is both the right thing to do and increasingly a legal consideration for Canadian businesses. ### Design that performs A pretty site that cannot be found, cannot be crawled, and cannot be used on a phone is not doing its job. When I build a site, the backend work happens alongside the design, not after it. Sitemaps, meta tags, image optimization, SSL, and alt text are all part of the package. And once it is built? Keeping all of that running is what [ongoing website support](/what-ongoing-website-support-actually-looks-like/) is for. Because the web moves, WordPress updates, and what worked at launch needs attention over time. **If you want a site that looks right and also runs right long after launch, let’s talk about what yours needs.** [Tell us about your site](https://unlimitedbs.ca/contact/) --- --- title: "Website copywriting tips: what your About, Services, and Contact pages should actually say" url: "https://unlimitedbs.ca/website-copywriting-tips/" lang: "en-US" type: "post" description: "You need a website, that much is clear. But before you can write a single word for it, or before a designer can build it, you need to know your brand. Not perfectly and not set in stone for eternity, but enough to answer one question: who do you want your clients to be, and what problem are you solving for them? Don’t let this paralyze you! Websites are meant to grow and evolve, just like your business does. But you can’t build something that connects with the right people if you haven’t thought about who those people are. Spend the time and do the work. It will be worth it. Then, once you know your brand, the website copywriting tips in this post will actually make sense to use. ## The question that drives all good website copy Frame everything on your website around this: what is your customer’s problem, and how do you fix it? Are you providing a product that takes a pain point off their plate? A service that saves them time or money? Are you the answer to something they have been searching for? Look at your ideal customer through that lens and your website copy will make the emotional connection that actually leads somewhere. Good website copywriting is not about you. It is about them. It is about what you can do for them. Keep that at the centre of every page. ### Your About page is not actually about you Whether you despise talking about yourself, or maybe you love sharing your hobbies, your kids, your adventures a wee bit too much, this section can be overwhelming to some. They get caught up in telling their readers about themselves. Wait…what? Isn’t the About section meant to be about you? Not really. To put it harshly, no one cares about you, haha! They care about about how you can help them. Frame it in that context on you’re well on your way! Lead with who you help and what you do for them, not your credentials. Tell your story in a way that shows why it matters to the client. Make it easy to understand what working with you actually looks like. ### Your Services page needs to speak their language Lay it out and SIMPLIFY. Don’t assume people know your lingo, know your product, and know what you do. The more straight forward you can make your content to digest, the more likely you will engage them enough to take the next step, which equates to business for you. Don’t be too broad, consider your market, and keep who are you trying to reach at top of mind. How do they absorb content? In what tone? Give them enough information about your service or product that they feel like they’ve got a good handle what you or your product/service can do for them. Because remember, that’s what people ultimately want…to know what you can do for them. How is your service going to benefit them? ### Your Contact page is a connection page The Contact page is where visitors come when they are ready to act, but also sometimes just to find your phone number. Either way, do not waste it. Use it as one last opportunity to reinforce that you are the solution. Remind them what you do and who you help. Make it easy to reach you in multiple ways. Think of it less as a form and more as a handshake. The whole site should be building to this moment. [Knowing your target audience](/website-target-audience/) upfront is what makes every page on your site, including this one, land with the right people. Almost every new client inquiry I received was from someone who had already had a website built by another designer and something had gone wrong. Not wrong like “I don’t love the fonts.” Wrong like: the layout had broken, error messages were appearing on live pages, browsers were blocking sections of the site entirely. Their once beautiful, well-functioning website, the one they had been proud to show off to clients and customers, had become something they were embarrassed to share. I hated that. Genuinely. These people had invested their money into something that had quietly deteriorated, sometimes within months of launch. And nobody had been there to catch it. That is when I decided that [WordPress hosting and maintenance](https://unlimitedbs.ca/services/hosting-maintenance/) would be part of every client relationship we had. Because the build is only as good as what comes after it. ## What our WordPress hosting and maintenance plans include We could count on one hand the number of clients in the past several years who have not signed up for one of our plans. Because once people understand what is at stake, the decision makes itself. ### What is covered Every WordPress hosting and maintenance plan with us includes: - All WordPress core updates as they are released - Theme updates - Plugin updates - One-click restore if anything goes sideways - Malware protection - Daily backups - SSL certificate (https certified) - Managed WordPress hosting ### Why each of these matters Updates are not optional maintenance, they are security. An outdated plugin or theme is an open door for hackers, and that door does not announce itself before something goes wrong. [We wrote about this in our WordPress mistakes post](/common-wordpress-mistakes/) because it is one of the most common and most preventable problems we see. Daily backups mean that if the worst does happen, you are not starting from scratch. You are restoring from yesterday. That is the difference between a bad afternoon and a catastrophic loss of work. Malware protection and SSL certificates are what keep your site trustworthy to visitors, to browsers, and to search engines. A site that gets flagged as insecure loses traffic fast and trust even faster. ## Your website is an investment worth protecting You spent time and money building something that represents your business online. WordPress hosting and maintenance is how you protect that investment so it keeps working the way it is supposed to, now and a year from now. **Want to make sure your site never becomes someone else’s cautionary tale?** [Contact us to discuss what plan works for you](https://unlimitedbs.ca/contact/) --- --- title: "Web accessibility design: colour, captions, and focus explained" url: "https://unlimitedbs.ca/web-accessibility-design/" lang: "en-US" type: "post" description: "If you have read our post on why web accessibility matters and the content side of making your site more accessible, this one is about the visual and interactive layer. Colour choices, video captions, and something called keyboard focus, and none of these are complicated once you know what you are looking at. Web accessibility design is about making sure the_ experience _of using your site works for people, not just the content of it. ## Do your videos need captions? Short answer: it depends. Here is how to know. If a video on your site is purely decorative; such as a background loop with no audio, no message, no story — captions are not required. But if your video communicates something, tells a story, or delivers any audio content your audience is meant to hear and understand, captions are required. Without them, you are excluding a real portion of your audience: people who are deaf or hard of hearing, people who process information better through text, people watching in a noisy coffee shop with their sound off, and people using a work computer they cannot turn up. That’s not a niche case. That’s a lot of people missing your message. Captions are also good for SEO. Search engines cannot watch a video, but they can read a transcript. If your video content is valuable, captions make it findable. ## Colour contrast in web accessibility design Raise your hand if you have ever squinted at a website trying to read light grey text on a white background. (Since hitting my 50’s HOLY this happens a lot!) High contrast colour schemes are a core part of web accessibility design because they make your content readable for people with colour vision deficiencies, and honestly for everyone else too. Here is what to aim for: - Use dark text on a light background, or light text on a dark background - Avoid similar shades or colours that blend into each other - Use a colour contrast checker to verify your site meets accessibility standards The [WebAIM Colour Contrast Checker](https://webaim.org/resources/contrastchecker/) is free and takes about thirty seconds to use. Type in your text colour and background colour and it tells you whether you pass or fail. Simple. ## Keyboard focus: the thing many have never heard of When someone navigates your website using a keyboard instead of a mouse, which is how many people with motor disabilities use the web, they need to know where they are on the page at any given moment. That is what keyboard focus is. When a user tabs through your links and buttons, there should be a visible indicator showing which element is currently selected: a colour change, a border, an outline, something. Without that visual signal, keyboard users are essentially navigating blind, clicking into the unknown and hoping for the best. This is one of those web accessibility design details that developers handle at the code level, but it’s worth knowing about and worth asking your designer to confirm is in place. **We could help with that.** [Send us a message!](https://unlimitedbs.ca/contact/) --- --- title: "Website target audience: why ‘everyone’ is not an answer" url: "https://unlimitedbs.ca/website-target-audience/" lang: "en-US" type: "post" description: "We say this a lot, and yet somehow it seems like never enough. Your website target audience is never everyone. Not even close. And until you get honest about who you are actually talking to, your site is going to feel like it is shouting into a very crowded, very indifferent room. Let’s talk about it. ## Your website target audience is not everyone Is your ideal client a 14-year-old gamer? A 79-year-old looking for love? A restaurant owner who has been burned by bad web design? A non-profit executive trying to stretch a tight budget? Because if your answer is “all of the above,” we have some news for you: you cannot speak meaningfully to all of those people at the same time. Trying to appeal to everyone usually means connecting deeply with no one. Spend time on this. It’s genuinely important, and it’s the kind of work that pays off across every piece of marketing you create, not just your website. ### What “narrowing it down” actually looks like Your target audience is defined by more than demographics. Think about what problem they have that you solve. What keeps them up at night? What have they already tried that did not work? What does success look like for them? The clearer you get on those answers, the easier it becomes to write copy that makes the right person feel like you are speaking directly to them. And that feeling? That is what turns a website visitor into a client. ## The one marketing tip that covers everything Here it is. Ready? **Solve your potential customer’s problems.** That is it. That is the whole tip! For your website, your social media, your business. Everything you create should answer the question: what does my ideal client need, and how do I help them get there? We know, we know. It sounds almost too simple. But most businesses are so focused on talking about themselves — their services, their process, their credentials — that they forget to lead with what the person on the other side of the screen actually cares about. ## How knowing your audience shapes your website When you know who you are talking to, everything gets easier. The words on your homepage, the services you highlight, the photos you choose, the tone you use, all of it can be calibrated to the person most likely to hire you. A website built for everyone tends to feel generic. A website built for a specific person feels like it gets them. And a website that gets your ideal client is one that converts. [HubSpot has a solid guide on building buyer personas](https://www.hubspot.com/make-my-persona) if you want a structured way to work through who your target audience actually is. Then bring that clarity to your web designer and watch what becomes possible. Not sure how that conversation works? Then find a business card or a brochure.Do they look like they" last_modified: "2026-04-22T21:56:51+00:00" categories: [Design] --- # Brand Consistency ## Why everything should look like it knows each other Want something you can act on right now? Go look at your Instagram feed. Then pull up your website. Then find a business card or a brochure. Do they look like they belong to the same business? Or does something feel a little… off? Brand consistency is one of the simplest things you can do for your marketing and one of the most commonly neglected. And the cost of neglecting it is higher than most people realize. ## What brand consistency actually means I am not talking about making everything look exactly the same, or curating your feed until it looks like a stock photo catalogue. That is not it. What I am talking about is keeping your brand recognizable across every place someone might encounter you. The same fonts. The same colours. The same general visual feel. So that when someone visits your Instagram and then clicks through to your website, they feel like they just walked into the same home, not a completely different building with a different address. ### Your marketing channels are extensions of each other, not separate entities Think of your website, your social media, your business cards, your signage, and your correspondence as best friends. They should complement each other, reference each other, and feel like they are clearly on the same team. When someone moves from your social feed to your website and the visual experience shifts entirely, it creates confusion. And confused visitors do not convert. Even if they are not consciously confused, there is no visual recognition to anchor the memory. The next time you show up in their feed, the connection to your site will not be there. ## Brand consistency = brand recognition Write that down. Tuck it in the corner of your brain you use when creating content, designing marketing material, or updating your site. Brand consistency is how you become recognizable. And being recognizable is how you stay top of mind. This applies to print too. Your brochures, your signage, your invoices — do they share the same look and feel as your website? They should. ### “But I don’t actually know my fonts or colour codes” That is not something to be embarrassed about. It is more common than you think. If you are not sure what fonts your site uses or what the hex codes are for your brand colours, reach out. Send me your name, email, and your website URL and I will pull your font names, sizes, weights, and colour codes for you. No excuse not to be consistent after that. Unless, of course, you look at your site and realize you do not actually want your marketing to match it. In that case, that is a whole different conversation we should have. Let’s talk about what a site you are proud to send people to actually looks like. [Send your info, we’ll send your branding details](https://unlimitedbs.ca/contact/) --- --- title: "The importance of web accessibility, said better than we could" url: "https://unlimitedbs.ca/importance-of-web-accessibility/" lang: "en-US" type: "post" description: "We talk about web accessibility a lot. We have written about [why it matters for your business](/web-accessibility/) and [what accessible content actually looks like](/accessible-website-content/). Since taking courses and gaining a better understanding of it, we can’t help but want to do better. But sometimes the importance of web accessibility is captured in a single sentence better than a whole blog post could. Here are four that have stuck with us. ## On who accessibility is really for > “When speaking of disabilities, the blind and their needs are most often used as an example. It is deceivingly simplistic since accessibility is something most of the population can benefit from.” — Marcus Österberg, web developer and accessibility advocate This one matters because it pushes back on the assumption that accessibility is a niche consideration for a small group of users. It’s not. Accessibility benefits people on slow connections, people using their phone in bright sunlight, people who are tired, people who are aging, people who are temporarily injured. The importance of web accessibility is not that it helps some people, it’s that it helps most people. ## On potential > “Accessibility allows us to tap into everyone’s potential.” — Debra Ruh, global disability inclusion strategist Short. Accurate. When a website is inaccessible, it is not just an inconvenience, it’s a door that stays closed. And the potential on the other side of that door — as customers, as contributors, as community — does not disappear. It just goes somewhere else. ## On doing your job a little better > “The one argument for accessibility that doesn’t get made nearly often enough is how extraordinarily better it makes some people’s lives. How many opportunities do we have to dramatically improve people’s lives just by doing our job a little better?” — Steve Krug, author of _Don’t Make Me Think_ Steve Krug wrote one of the most-read books in web usability, and this quote is the one we keep coming back to. The importance of web accessibility is not abstract. It is measurable in the daily experience of real people who can or cannot use the internet to do the things everyone else takes for granted. We get to make that better just by being more thoughtful about how we build. That is a remarkable opportunity. ## On what the web was always meant to be > “The power of the Web is in its universality. Access by everyone regardless of disability is an essential aspect.” — Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web The person who built the thing said from the start that universal access was not a feature. It was the point. [The W3C](https://www.w3.org/WAI/) — the organization Berners-Lee founded — has been working to make that vision real ever since through global accessibility standards that set the baseline for how the web should work for everyone. We are in the business of building websites that work for your business, for your brand, and for every person who lands on your page. Your website has been sitting over there, quietly doing its thing. At least you think so, you actually haven’t really looked at it in a while. Sound familiar? Running through a website maintenance checklist every few months is one of the simplest things you can do to keep your site working as hard as you are. And honestly? Most businesses are overdue. Does your website function optimally right now? Is it a true reflection of your brand as it stands today? Those are the two questions worth mulling over before we get into the details. ## Run your website maintenance checklist Businesses grow. Focus shifts. And sometimes you just want to make sure you are still presenting as the organization your clients can trust. Here is what to actually look at. ### Content that has gone stale Is your copy still accurate? Services change, teams change, and pricing changes. If your website is still describing who you were two years ago, that’s a problem. Old gallery projects are a quiet culprit too. If your most recent featured work is from 2022, visitors are going to wonder if you have been busy or just gone. Check your calls to action while you’re at it. Is the button still relevant? Does the offer still make sense? Sometimes a small tweak there does more than a full redesign. ### Things that have stopped working You used to have a live social feed on your homepage. Now it’s just a blank box. (Instagram changes their APIs ALL THE TIME so if you have an Instagram feed, you are very susceptible to this). Maybe you had a contact form that sent inquiries straight to your inbox. Does it still? These things break quietly and often go unnoticed until a potential client gives up and moves on. Send some tests from it. Run through your site like a first-time visitor. Click the things. Fill in the forms. See what actually happens. ## Is your site still a true reflection of your brand? This one is easy to let slide. The site looked great at launch. But your brand has evolved, your photography is better, your messaging is tighter. Does the website know that? A site that looks dated or out of sync with the rest of your marketing sends a subtle message to visitors: nobody is paying attention here. And in a world where people make snap judgments about credibility in seconds, that matters more than most business owners realize. ## The SEO you might be letting slip Your SEO does not maintain itself. If you are not creating anything new, there is nothing fresh for Google to crawl. Your rankings can quietly erode while you are busy running your business. A basic website maintenance checklist should include a look at whether your meta descriptions are still relevant, whether your images have alt text, and whether your page titles still reflect what you actually do. [Google Search Console](https://search.google.com/search-console/about) is a free tool that can show you how your site is performing in search and flag issues worth fixing. Not sure what half of those things mean? That is what [ongoing website support](/what-ongoing-website-support-actually-looks-like/) is for. You focus on the business. We watch the site. ## When to call it in Some of this you can handle yourself. A content update, a new photo, a revised service description — those are totally manageable. But if your site is slow, broken on mobile, or you genuinely cannot remember the last time plugins were updated, it is time to bring someone in. Is it time to revisit your site? You already know the answer or you would not have read this far. **Let’s bring it back to life.** [Reach out here ](https://unlimitedbs.ca/contact/) --- --- title: "Common WordPress mistakes that are quietly hurting your site" url: "https://unlimitedbs.ca/common-wordpress-mistakes/" lang: "en-US" type: "post" description: "WordPress is an incredible platform. It powers over 40% of the web, it is flexible, it is powerful, and it is genuinely one of the best tools available for building a business website. It is also very easy to quietly misuse. These are some of the most common WordPress mistakes we see, and one of them is so specific we cannot believe we still have to say it out loud. Spoiler: it involves restaurants. And PDFs. We will get there. ## Common WordPress mistakes and how to fix them ### Treating plugins like Pokémon You do not want to catch them all. We cannot stress this enough. Plugins are not like toppings at a free pizza bar. Every plugin you add to your WordPress site is additional code running in the background, and too many of them will bloat your site and make it run painfully slow. Slow sites lose visitors. Slow sites rank lower in search. Slow sites frustrate people who were perfectly willing to hire you thirty seconds ago. The rule is simple: only install what you actually need, make sure it has strong ratings and a solid update history, and then use it. If you installed a plugin eight months ago and have never touched it, it probably needs to go. [WordPress.org](https://wordpress.org/plugins/) is a good starting point for checking plugin reputations before you install anything new. ### Skipping SEO setup Out of the box, WordPress is not optimized for SEO. The permalink structure alone needs to be changed before your site is set up to be found properly. And that is before we even get into meta descriptions, page titles, image alt text, and all the other pieces that tell search engines what your content is actually about. SEO is not optional. It is how people find you. If you are creating content and nobody is seeing it, this is usually a big part of why. ### Ignoring your updates This one is the most common WordPress mistake and also the most dangerous. Outdated plugins, themes, and WordPress core are the number one entry point for hackers. Running old versions is essentially leaving a window open and hoping nobody notices. Updates exist for a reason. Security patches, bug fixes, performance improvements, all of it. Check your dashboard regularly, but also check the new version changelog (list of things changed) to ensure it is compatible with your version of WordPress. If it is not, there are potential issues. If that is not something you have time for, [hire someone to handle it for you](/what-ongoing-website-support-actually-looks-like/). It is significantly less expensive than recovering a hacked site. ## And now, the restaurant PDF menu conversation We said we would get here. If you run a restaurant and your online menu is a PDF, please read this carefully: **nobody likes viewing a PDF on their phone.** Nobody. The user experience is genuinely terrible. Pinching and zooming to read a font size that was designed for print, trying to scroll sideways, squinting at a file that takes forever to load on a mobile connection is frustrating, time-consuming, and it is the opposite of accessible. There is also an SEO problem. PDFs are not easily indexed by search engines, which means your menu content is essentially invisible to Google. A potential customer searching “chicken parmesan near me” is not going to find your PDF. ### What to do instead Put your menu on your site as actual text. Not an image. Not a PDF. Text. Yes, it takes more effort to update. Yes, it is worth it. Your web designer can set it up in a way that makes future updates manageable, and your customers will thank you with their business. We have been saying this since 2011 and will keep saying it until the cows come home. Or until all restaurants stop using pdfs for menus on their websites, whichever comes first. **Want someone to catch these things before they become a problem?** [Contact us today, let’s get started! ](https://unlimitedbs.ca/contact/) --- --- title: "What ongoing website support actually looks like" url: "https://unlimitedbs.ca/what-ongoing-website-support-actually-looks-like/" lang: "en-US" type: "post" description: "A while back we received a review from JoieFarm Winery that said \"We always feel well supported and in good hands.\" That review came from a working relationship that had been running for years and it sums up exactly how" last_modified: "2026-04-22T21:47:46+00:00" categories: [Maintenance] --- # What ongoing website support actually looks like A while back we received a review from [JoieFarm Winery](https://joiefarm.com/) that said _“We always feel well supported and in good hands.” _ That review came from a working relationship that had been running for years and it sums up exactly how we want all our clients to feel. If you have ever launched a website and then watched it quietly fall behind, you already know how this plays out. The site goes live, the invoice is paid, and the designer pulls a _“see ya later alligator”_ and is never heard from again. Six months later a plugin breaks, a form stops sending, or you want to add a new service and nobody is picking up the phone. We are more of an “in a while crocodile” kind of operation. ## What real support looks like, week to week When you build with us, ongoing website support is not a separate product bolted onto the end. It is part of how your site keeps working. ### The day-to-day stuff you shouldn’t have to think about Plugin and theme updates done on a schedule. Security patches applied before they become a problem. Backups you never have to think about. A real person on the other end when something changes. ### What you get after launch Every client receives a Project Details Package that covers the fonts, colours, image sizes, and all the design specifics so you have everything you need for branding continuity when creating other marketing material. PDF manuals and video tutorials are also included so you can make content updates yourself if you choose to. And if you would rather not touch it? That is what we are here for. ## Why it matters for your business A WordPress site is never really finished. Your offers change, your team changes, and the web itself keeps moving. Sites without support drift out of date, start loading slower, and eventually become a liability rather than an asset. Ongoing website support keeps the site current, accessible, and ready for the visitors you worked hard to earn. It also saves you from the worst outcome in web design, which is having to rebuild the whole thing every couple of years because nobody was paying attention in between. ## The quiet case for reliability Reliability is not flashy, but it is what clients remember. Being in good hands means you can focus on running your business while someone else watches the site. [WordPress recommends keeping your plugins, themes, and core updated regularly](https://wordpress.org/documentation/article/updating-wordpress/) as the first line of defence against security vulnerabilities. We handle that for you, on a schedule, without you ever having to remember it exists. Are you are looking at your current website and wondering what your site actually needs behind the scenes? So let’s sort that out. Your website needs to live somewhere on the internet. That somewhere is a server, a computer that stores your site’s files and delivers them to anyone who visits your URL. WordPress hosting is the service that provides that server. Without it, your site does not exist online. ## The domain and hosting analogy that actually makes sense Think of it this way. Your domain, your .com, your .ca is your address. It is how people find you. Your WordPress hosting is the home itself. The physical structure that actually exists at that address. You need both. A domain with no hosting is just an address with nothing behind it. Hosting with no domain means nobody can find you. Together, they are what puts your business on the internet in a way people can actually visit. Both are ongoing costs, like rent and utilities. They are not optional extras, they are the foundation everything else is built on. ## Why the hosting you choose actually matters Here’s where a lot of people make a decision they later regret. Not all WordPress hosting is equal, and the wrong choice shows up in ways that directly affect your business. ### Speed Slow hosting means a slow site. A slow site loses visitors. [Google’s research shows](https://web.dev/articles/why-speed-matters) that as page load time increases from one second to three seconds, the probability of a visitor bouncing increases by 32%. Your hosting provider has a direct impact on that number. ### Security A good WordPress hosting provider includes malware protection, regular backups, and SSL certificates. These are not nice-to-haves. They are what stand between your site and the very real risks that come with being on the internet. ### Support When something goes wrong, and sadly eventually something always does, you want a host with actual, responsive customer service. Not a forum post from four years ago and a chatbot. ## Why we choose managed WordPress hosting for every client We have strong opinions on this, and we are not shy about sharing them. This industry has a habit of choosing the more complicated option and calling it the better one. We call the better option for our clients is what is practical, what is easy to maintain even if they eventually move to a different designer, what offers genuinely good customer service, what loads their site fast, and what keeps it secure, all while making us more efficient so we can save them time and money. Managed WordPress hosting checks every one of those boxes. It is built specifically for WordPress, optimized for performance and security, and it is the environment we trust to keep our clients’ sites running the way they should. If you have questions about WordPress hosting and what the right setup looks like for your site, [our maintenance plans cover all of it](https://unlimitedbs.ca/services/hosting-maintenance/) and we’re always happy to answer questions. Sometimes it is a single word change on a button. Sometimes it’s how you break up a paragraph. The small stuff adds up fast, and the good news is that most of it makes your site better for every single visitor, not just those with disabilities. Here are a few of the easiest wins. ## I beg you, stop using acronyms and jargon I mean it. DNAUKWYASF. **D**o **n**ot **a**ssume **u**sers **k**now **w**hat **y**our **a**cronyms **s**tand **f**or. (Yes, we made that up. No, we are not sorry.) The real version of this tip is simple: write clearly! Use language that a first-time visitor can understand without a glossary. Avoid industry jargon, unexplained acronyms, and technical terms that only make sense to someone already inside your world. Clear and concise content is accessible website content. It serves users with cognitive and learning disabilities, non-native language speakers, people who are just in a hurry, and really everyone who has ever bounced off a website because it felt like reading a legal document. ## Stop saying “click here” Picture a screen reader announcing every link on your page. “Click here. Click here. Click here. Read more. Click here.” Helpful? Not remotely. Descriptive links are one of the simplest accessible website content fixes you can make. Instead of “click here,” write the actual thing. “Learn more about our web design services.” “Download our accessibility checklist.” “Book a free consultation.” The link text should tell the person exactly where they are going or what will happen when they get there. This also happens to be better for SEO. Search engines read link text to understand context, so descriptive links help your rankings as a side benefit. ### A quick test Go to your site right now and read your links out loud, out of context. Do they make sense on their own? If not, they need work. ## Give your content room to breathe You know when someone rambles on and on without pausing and you lose track of where they are going and what the point was and whether there even is one? Your web page content can do the exact same thing to your visitors. Headings and subheadings are not just visual formatting, they are navigation. Screen readers use them to help users jump through a page efficiently. People who skim (which is most people) use them to find what they are looking for without reading every word. Breaking your content into clearly labelled sections with logical headings makes it easier to consume for everyone. This is also why the heading structure on your site matters. An H1 for the page title, H2 for main sections, H3 for sub-points within those sections. It creates a logical outline that both humans and assistive technologies can follow. [We covered exactly this in how we structure our own blog posts](/wordpress-seo-basics-well-built-website/), because accessibility and SEO are more connected than most people realize. ## Accessible website content is just good content That’s the honest summary. The habits that make a site accessible; clear language, descriptive links, logical structure, are the same habits that make a site readable, findable, and worth visiting. If you want to go deeper on accessibility standards and best practices, the [W3C Web Accessibility Initiative](https://www.w3.org/WAI/) is the authoritative source and a genuinely useful starting point. Computer class with Mr. Grove. > _“I’ll never use a computer.”_ That’s an actual quote from me, Brenda Sargeant (née Wannstrom), author of this and many other statements I deeply regret. I said it with 100% conviction. I thought it was an absolute waste of time and ridiculous that I was being forced to take the course. Sorry, Mr. Grove. I did you wrong. ## What the web design creative process actually looks like Here is something that I often say, and then often realize I’ve probably just freaked out my client. When a project is in the early stages, we will sometimes say something like: _“We don’t have anything to show you yet, but it’s in our head.”_ That’s probably mildly terrifying for someone that just handed over 40% of the project cost to hear. It’s often met with a pause. Maybe an eye roll. And definitely some uncertainty about whether that is a reassuring thing to say. It is. We promise. ### Why “it’s in our head” is actually a huge deal! The web design creative process starts long before anything appears on a screen. The planning phase is the largest, most time-consuming part of any project and it is entirely invisible from the outside. Here is what is actually happening during that time: - Gathering inspiration and identifying the visual direction - Making design choices that suit the brand, the audience, and the goals - Research into the industry, the competitors, and what the ideal client responds to - Working out the layout and the logic of how pages connect to each other - Holding the big picture of how it is all going to come together None of that produces a deliverable you can look at. But all of it shapes what the site eventually becomes. ## Trust is what makes it work This is also where clients really have to put their trust in us and we do not take that lightly. Not everyone is as excited about a half-formed idea living in someone else’s brain, and that’s totally fair. We try not to forget that what feels like enormous progress on our end can feel like radio silence on theirs. [Working with a web designer](/working-with-a-web-designer/) means leaning into a process that is not always linear or visible in the early stages. The clients who trust that phase tend to be the happiest with what comes out the other side. ## From “I’ll never use this” to “this is my whole career” The irony of spending your career doing the thing you once declared useless is not lost on me. But here we are. The web design creative process is genuinely one of my favourite things. The research, the ideas, the moment when it all starts to click together in your head before a single line of code is written. Mr. Grove: thank you for making me take that class. Sorry about the attitude. Do you do creative work? Do you relate to the idea that getting it fully formed in your head is a major accomplishment before anything is made? Or are you firmly in the eye-rolling camp? I would genuinely love to know. --- --- title: "Non-profit website design: how to turn your story into support" url: "https://unlimitedbs.ca/non-profit-website-design/" lang: "en-US" type: "post" description: "Non-profit website design starts with a simple truth: your organization has a story worth telling. And stories, when told well, do not just inform people. They move them to act. Donate. Volunteer. Share. Show up. Every non-profit has goals. Reach people. Make a difference. Create change. Your website can and should be an active tool in getting you there, not just a digital brochure that sits untouched between grant applications. ## Why non-profit website design is about more than looking good Obviously good design matters. But for a non-profit, the stakes are higher than aesthetics. Good non-profit website design is about building trust and credibility with donors, volunteers, and the communities you serve. Trust takes time to build and seconds to break. An outdated, hard-to-navigate, or poorly designed site signals to potential supporters that the same lack of attention might extend to the work itself. That is not the message you want to send when you are asking people to believe in your mission! The investment in a professionally designed site is not a luxury for non-profits. It is protection for the trust you have worked hard to earn. ## Tell the stories that move people Chances are good that your organization has access to real, impactful examples of how you have touched someone’s life, helped a person improve their circumstances, or made something in your community better. Those stories are your most powerful marketing tool. Use them. ### What good storytelling looks like on a non-profit website People want to support things that matter. Your job is to make them feel why what you do matters. That means going beyond statistics and mission statements and getting into the human moments. A family housed. A kid who stayed in school. A community that has access to something it didn’t have before. Written well, that content builds connection. Connection builds engagement. Engagement builds the kind of loyalty that keeps donors coming back and volunteers spreading the word. ### Make it easy for people to say yes A great story needs a clear next step. Your non-profit website design should make it genuinely easy for someone to donate, sign up, or get involved the moment they feel moved to. Confusing navigation, buried donation buttons, or a clunky form are the fastest ways to lose someone who was already on your side. ## Non-profit website design that works as hard as you do By making your website easy to use and navigate, and filling it with content that builds real connections, you can increase engagement and ultimately drive more donations and support. That is not wishful thinking. That is what a well-designed site actually does. [Imagine Canada](https://www.imaginecanada.ca/) has excellent resources on donor trust and what supporters look for when evaluating a non-profit. Your website is often the first place they look. We love working with non-profits because the work has purpose beyond the project. The best projects, the ones that produce sites we are genuinely proud of, have a few things in common. And none of them are about having a big budget or a clear creative vision walking in the door. Here is what working with a web designer actually looks like when it goes right. ## Working with a web designer means being human first No matter how digital the world gets, people connect with people. The brands that cut through the noise are the ones that feel real, and working with a web designer who understands that makes all the difference. ### Tell your story, not just your services Your brand has a story. The reason you started, the clients you love working with, the thing that makes you different from the six other businesses doing what you do. That story should live in your website, and it should be told in your words, not in industry jargon dressed up as personality. The more your brand sounds like you, the more it will connect with the people who are the right fit for you. Authenticity is the thing your audience has a finely tuned radar for, and they will notice when it is missing. ### Be generous! Acting generously by giving value, contributing to your community, creating content that actually helps someone is one of the most effective things you can do for your brand. It’s also one of the most satisfying and it doesn’t always cost money. A blog post that answers a real question. A social share. A referral. Generosity builds trust, and trust builds the long-lasting kind of loyalty that no ad spend can manufacture. ## What the best design projects actually look like We don’t just throw a bunch of things at the wall and hope something sticks. Working with a web designer should involve real conversation, real questions, and a process that leaves you understanding your own site by the time it launches. ### Building a relationship, not just a website Taking the time to truly understand a client’s needs, their goals, their customers, their industry, their voice, sets the pace for the entire project from start to finish. The questions we ask at the beginning are not filler. They are how we make sure the final product actually fits the business. If you have questions during the process, ask. We love it. Genuinely. An informed client is a better collaborator, and a better collaborator produces a better website. ## The subtract-first approach to design Creativity is not adding more: the best design decisions are often about what you leave out. Piling every idea, every message, every feature into a single design does not make it richer. It makes it overwhelming. Real creativity is giving someone enough to be interested, or intrigued, without handing them everything at once. Simplicity is not a limitation, it’s a choice, and a hard one. This applies to content too. Write everything you want to say, then subtract. Then subtract half of that. What is left is usually the good stuff. [Smashing Magazine](https://www.smashingmagazine.com/) has decades of writing on design principles worth diving into if you want to go deeper on this. But the short version? Less, done well, beats more, done adequately, every time. If you are ready to start a project where the relationship matters as much as the result, [let’s talk about what that looks like.](/web-design-pricing/) --- --- title: "Web accessibility: why it’s good for business and the right thing to do" url: "https://unlimitedbs.ca/web-accessibility/" lang: "en-US" type: "post" description: "Here's a question for you: who is your website actually built for? Web accessibility is the practice of designing and building websites that can be used by everyone, including people with disabilities, older users, and anyone navigating the world differently than the assumed default. And before you assume this does not apply to your business, consider this: there are over 6 million Canadians living with a disability. Add their families, friends, and the people who support them, and you are looking at a significant portion of the population that your site may currently be turning away. That’s not just a social issue, that’s a business one. ## The business case for web accessibility Here’s the thing about doing the right thing: it turns out it’s also the smart thing. ### Reach more people Designing an accessible website means more people can actually use it. More people who can use your site means more potential clients, customers, and supporters who can find you, understand what you offer, and reach out. Tapping into a market of millions of Canadians with disabilities, and the people around them, is not a niche consideration, it’s a significant opportunity most businesses are currently leaving on the table. ### Build the kind of brand loyalty that sticks When someone with a disability visits your site and finds that it actually works for them, that experience says something. It says you thought about them. It says you didn’t design for the assumed average user and leave everyone else to figure it out. That kind of intentionality builds trust and loyalty in a way that no ad campaign can replicate. Web accessibility signals to every visitor that you value them as a person, not just as a transaction. That matters! ## You are in charge of this Technically, the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) sets the guidelines for web accessibility across the internet. The [W3C’s accessibility standards](https://www.w3.org/WAI/standards-guidelines/) are the global benchmark that developers and designers work toward. But here’s the reality: you are the one responsible for your own site and the content on it. Not a governing body. You. Web accessibility covers a wider range of needs than most people realize. That includes people with blindness or low vision, learning disabilities, cognitive disabilities, deafness or hearing loss, speech disabilities, and physical disabilities. It also includes temporary limitations like a broken arm, a screen in bright sunlight, a slow internet connection. And age. Accessibility benefits everyone at some point. I can tell as an almost 53 year old I already consistently see things online and around me that are just not easy to read due to colour contrast, font size, etc. I’m not that old! ## Do good and look good. You do not have to pick one. Some businesses approach accessibility as a compliance checkbox. We would encourage you to see it differently. Being a frontrunner on accessibility builds a reputation. It positions your brand as one that genuinely cares about the experience of every visitor, and that reputation leads to increased customer loyalty and a positive brand image that is genuinely hard to fake. Do good by providing inclusive digital experiences because it is the socially responsible and right thing to do. Look good because businesses that lead on this stand out from the majority that have not gotten there yet. Win. Win. Ready to talk about steps we take to make your site more accessible? Yes, that conversation. The one where someone asks how much a website costs and both sides get a little weird about it. We’re here to tell you it doesn’t have to be awkward, and that talking about budget upfront is actually one of the best things you can do to make your project go smoothly. So. What IS your budget? ## Web design pricing is not a guessing game We get asked for ballpark estimates all the time. We get it, people want a general sense of what they are getting into before they invest time in a conversation. That’s completely reasonable. But here’s the thing. Web design pricing is not like buying a couch where you can eyeball the room and give a rough number. Every project is different. The scope, the goals, the timeline, the number of pages, the integrations, the content needs — all of it changes the number. Without understanding those things, a ballpark is not useful to either of us. It’s just a number we made up that might be wildly off in either direction. Invest the time in a proper conversation with your potential designer so they can give you a realistic estimate that actually fits your project. ## Why we always ask what your budget is When we ask what your budget is, we’re not trying to size up how much we can charge you. We’re trying to figure out whether we are a good fit before either of us spends an hour on a call. Web design pricing at Unlimited BS starts at a certain point, and if your budget is under $5K, we are probably not the right fit for you right now. That’s not a judgment, it is just an honest answer that saves you time. On the flip side, if your budget is $80K, we are also likely not the designers for you (although we would not say no if you really wanted us!). ### What “fitting the project” actually means Budget tells us what is possible. It tells us how to scope the project, what we can realistically deliver, and whether we can actually do the job you need done. Skipping that conversation means we might spend time planning something that does not match what you’re working with. Nobody wins in that scenerio. ## The “how much for a simple site?” question AHHHHHHH, this one. It makes us a bit screamy. We get it, but here is what happens almost every time: your definition of “simple” and our definition of “simple” are not the same thing. Not because anyone is wrong, but because you do not yet know what goes into a website that actually works. And that is exactly what we want to help you understand. Web design pricing involves a lot of things that happen behind the scenes and never show up on the front end. SEO setup. Site structure. Page speed. Security. Accessibility. These are not optional extras, they are part of building something worth having. ## What a discovery call actually is It’s a conversation. That’s it. We talk through your goals for the site, who your customers are, what you want visitors to do when they get there, and what your timeline looks like. We get to ask questions. You get to ask questions. Nobody is signing anything. Our initial consults and no-obligation quotes are free. And when we say no obligation, we actually mean it. Hard pushy sales are the worst, and we have no interest in pressuring anyone into a project. Not sure if hiring a professional designer is even worth it for your business? Most people don’t know what questions to ask which means they end up comparing apples to tomatoes. And tomatoes are the most confusing fruit ever. (Yes, fruit. Look it up.) The web design industry is full of wildly different offerings, pricing structures, platforms, and levels of ongoing support. Two quotes that look similar on the surface might be completely different products. Knowing the right questions to ask a web designer puts you in the driver’s seat so you can make a genuinely informed decision rather than guessing which one is the right fit. ## Questions to ask a web designer before you commit ### What platform will you build it on? WordPress, Shopify, Squarespace, Wix, Joomla: these are not interchangeable. Each has different strengths, different ongoing costs, and different levels of flexibility. Understanding what platform your site is being built on matters for everything that comes after launch, including who can maintain it and what it will cost to make changes. ### What are the ongoing monthly and yearly costs? Be sure the quote you get is giving you the full picture. Domain registration, hosting, platform fees, maintenance plans, plugin licences all have costs. You should know what they are. ### What do you hand over at the end? This one is critical. When the project is done, do you get all the logins? Access to your domain? Your hosting account? The ability to make changes without going back to the designer for every little tweak? A professional handoff should leave you in control of your own site. ### What are their obligations after launch? Some designers build and wave goodbye from a safe distance. Others offer ongoing maintenance, support, and a real person to call when something breaks. [Knowing which kind you are hiring](https://unlimitedbs.ca/services/hosting-maintenance/) changes the long-term cost and stress level. ### Where will the site be hosted? Hosting affects speed, security, and uptime. Where your site lives matters. Ask who hosts it, what that includes, and what happens to your hosting if you ever part ways with the designer. ### What do they do for Google visibility? SEO is not automatic. Ask specifically what steps they take to set up your site for search engine visibility. If the answer is vague or non-existent, that is important to know upfront. ### Do they explain their process clearly? A good designer should be able to walk you through what happens from first conversation to launch, and be able to explain the decisions they make in plain language. But if the reason she got the job is that she offered to do it for free, or close to it, your business may end up paying for that decision in ways that show up later. If you’re on the fence about whether to hire a professional web designer, this one is for you. ## Why anyone can build a website (but not everyone should) We said it and we mean it: anyone can build a website. There are plenty of DIY platforms out there, and many business owners can put together something that looks reasonable with a template and a free trial. We are not here to knock that. ### Knowledge is Power: What DIY platforms are not going to tell you Do you know how to optimize your site for speed? How to set it up so it actually converts visitors into clients? How to structure your content so Google pays attention to it? That is where hiring a professional web designer earns its keep. It is not about the pretty. It is about the purpose. [Smashing Magazine](https://www.smashingmagazine.com/) puts it well: effective web design is not just visual, it is functional, accessible, and built with the user’s next move in mind. A site that looks great but does not perform is essentially a very expensive business card that nobody can find. ## The inner pages problem nobody talks about Here’s the thing. DIY website builders can produce a decent homepage. There is a template for that, and the homepage is always where the effort goes. But the inside pages? Your About, your Services, your Contact? Those are where things tend to fall apart. And it bears repeating: not every visitor lands on your homepage. A lot of them find you through a Google search result, a blog post, or a direct link to a specific page. If those inner pages are a mess, that’s the impression you are leaving. A professional web designer thinks about the whole experience, not just the front door. ## You do not need to know exactly what you want The assumption is that our ideal client walks in with a clear vision, a mood board, and a folder full of reference sites. That would be inaccurate. We actually find those projects the trickiest. What we love is when someone comes to us knowing how they want their customers to feel, who they want to reach, and why. Then they hand us the creative. That’s where the good stuff happens! That’s where there is room to build something that actually fits the business rather than just checking boxes on a list. So if you don’t have a creative bone in your body? Not a problem. We have 213. ### What a good discovery process looks like A professional web designer will walk you through the questions you have not thought to ask yet, explain the decisions they are making, and build something you actually understand by the time it launches. You should finish the project informed about your own site, and if that’s not what you are being offered, it might be worth asking why. ## What the “Free” website actually costs The free website seems to have a way of becoming the expensive website. Not right away, but eventually. Maybe the plugin structure is wrong and the site runs slow. Maybe the SEO basics were skipped entirely. Maybe the inner pages are a disaster on mobile. Maybe you outgrow it in eight months and have to start over from scratch. When you hire a professional web designer from the start, you’re investing in something built to grow with your business, reflect your brand properly, and perform the way it’s supposed to. You also get someone who can explain every decision they made and why. Your second cousin’s son’s girlfriend probably can’t promise you that, she didn’t go into web design. Invest in someone who did. **Ready to talk about your website? **Our initial consult and no-obligation quote are free. I’m the founder, owner, designer, admin, accountant, marketer, and basically all the bs behind Unlimited BS Web Design. Having BS as my initials when I started this business was the perfect opportunity to create a brand that is completely me, and one that people tend to remember. They may question it…but they remember! And in this business, being memorable is half the battle. ## What I actually do as a WordPress web designer Short answer: I build [websites](https://unlimitedbs.ca/services/web-design/). Longer answer: I help businesses figure out who they are online and then build something that actually reflects that. Really understanding your brand is what I love discovering. If you are not clear on what your business stands for, who it is trying to reach, and why those people should choose you, it is hard to design a site that makes any of that land. So before design starts, we nail that down. Our commitment is to make sure your website is a true reflection of your business and your brand. Not a template someone filled in quickly. Not something that looks nice in a demo but feels wrong the moment your name is on it. ### Why brand clarity comes first A website is only as strong as the clarity it gives. The copy, the design choices, the navigation, the calls to action. All of it flows from understanding who you are trying to speak to and what you want them to do. That’s the foundation. Everything else is built on top of it. ## What I remember about starting out Fourteen-plus years into this business (hard to believe!), I still think about where it all began. Not because I’m stuck in the past, but because I genuinely believe it makes me better at what I do today. I totally remember what it felt like at the beginning stages of starting a business. The uncertainty, the feeling of investing money in something you actually don’t fully understand and having to trust the person on the other side of the table. It’s not the most comfortable feeling. Because I still remember that feeling of not understanding all the things, of not knowing the right questions to ask, I’m committed to walking every client through the whole picture. Whether you’re brand new to getting a website or just don’t understand why you need hosting, I honestly love questions! I love talking through the process. From start to finish, that’s what I’m here for. If you need a WordPress web designer who will explain every decision and make sure you actually understand the site you end up with, let’s talk about what that looks like. No BS answers so you are not left wondering. ## The basics Resources, answers to commonly asked questions, understanding domains, hosting, and more. ### What’s a domain and why do I need one? A domain is the url for your site. For example, the one for this site is: unlimitedbs.ca . It’s where people go to find you on the internet. You use it for your marketing. Put it on your business cards. It is a must have. Protip: Do not let your web designer put your domain under their account – get your own! Trust us on this, we’ve had countless instances where clients have lost access to their domain when switching providers. Your domain should always be under your business’s account. We can help you set that up, but will insist it be in your own account. Show More Show Less ### What is hosting and why do I need it? Website hosting is like renting space on the internet for your website. It’s not a negotiable service, it’s a requirement to having a website online. Here’s why website hosting is essential: - **Accessibility**: Without hosting, your website can’t be seen by anyone. Hosting makes sure your site is available 24/7 for visitors, customers, and search engines. - **Speed**: A good hosting service keeps your website fast. Slow websites frustrate users and can make them leave quickly. Search engines like Google also rank faster sites higher, so good hosting can help improve your site’s SEO (Search Engine Optimization). - **Security**: Hosting companies provide security features like backups and malware protection, helping keep your site safe from hackers. Secure sites are trusted more by visitors and search engines. - **Storage**: Hosting provides the space where all your website’s files, images, and content are stored. The better the hosting, the more smoothly your website runs, and this can also positively impact your SEO. In short, reliable hosting is crucial for keeping your website online, running fast, and staying secure—factors that all play a big role in improving your site’s visibility in search engines. Show More Show Less - ### Where to start with your web design project. Going in prepared sets you up for a smooth, quick start to your project because you’ve already done the work! Here’s an idea of the kind of things you’d want to start compiling for a new site. Gather all your login credentials: domain, website, hosting and any connected systems (bookings, newsletter, payment providers, etc.) - Content: tagline, about us, services, images, contact info, etc. Put it all in a Word document, or google, or even an email. Designer will usually tweak as necessary. - Images: GREAT QUALITY imaging is key! Have a few great images gathered that reflect your work. Name all images (example: instead of img2432, use descriptive words of what the image is of. Don’t resize them – designer will resize to suit their need. - Logo files: all formats, designer will chose what format they need - Brand Guidelines, if you have – colours, fonts etc. that have to be followed (designer doesn’t NEED this, it is just if you have it) - Social Media: if you have, provide list with links - Consider spending some time thinking about sites you’ve seen and love, send links to those (doesn’t need to be same industry) - Compile list of competitors, just for reference - Consider your demographic, best way for people to contact you, and your process – what does that look like? Would a potential client benefit from knowing how you work? Sometimes I think it’s nice to provide that info in a short format so those who make decisions based on comfort level, have access to that information. - Really nail down your KEY offerings. What do you want to be known as the expert in? I hope that helps, all the best on your journey to a new website you love and are proud to show off! Show More Show Less - ### What other fees are involved? With us, there are monthly/yearly options for Hosting and Maintenance of your site. You can learn more about it on our [Hosting & Maintenance](https://unlimitedbs.ca/hosting-maintenance/) page. You’ll also have a yearly charge from whatever registrar your domain is at. This typically is around $25/year and we highly HIGHLY recommend having this in your own account, or at the very least, ensure you have full access to it (login credentials). There can be instances where your site requires paid for plugins for certain features on your site (SEO premium plugins, various WooCommerce plugins, Event Calendars, etc.). These costs should be laid out in your initial proposal and will be billed monthly/yearly. Show More Show Less ### Other questions we get Why do you want to know our budget? We’re always going to ask what your budget is. It’s because we don’t want to waste your time. If your budget is under $5K, we’re not the designers for you so why not get that figured out right off the hop? If your budget is $80K, we’re also not the designers for you (but we wouldn’t say no if you really wanted us! 🤣) Budget matters. We need to know what we can do for the investment you are willing to make. It’s as simple, and awkward, as that. When should I book my site design? We take on a maximum of 2 clients per month. So if you are considering a site, and we’re booking a couple months out, now is a good time to reach out. We can meet (in person or virtual) and chat about your business. You’ll get a free detailed quote and then can decide if you want to book and get in the calendar. So what are you getting for this investment? a mobile friendly, USER friendly website that works in all modern browsers. - a website properly set up so it can grow with your business and continue to function properly for years to come so you aren’t looking at a rebuild every few years - a website you are proud to send your clients to. - a presence on the internet that makes you stand out from your competitors because it speaks to your niche, your demographic, your people. - a web designer that works WITH you, and continues to do so well after your site is launched. What’s the process? All you need to do is make the first connection. Here on my website, or via phone. From there I will walk you through all the next steps which typically look like this. - Review quote - Agree to quote, sign contract and pay 40% deposit - Compile allllll the things I ask for, this will include logins (if you already have a domain and/or hosting and a website), images (if you are providing), and content (if you are providing) Then I totally take it from there, you just sit back, have a coffee and do what you do best – run your business. I’ll send you draft 1 and you’ll review it with a fine toothed comb and give me allllll the changes you’d like to see. I do them. And repeat, two more times. We launch. You settle up the bill. I send you the Project Hand-off document which includes all the details of your site – versions of WordPress and the theme, colour codes used, fonts used, image sizes used. AND a manual so you are equipped to do your own content updates! What does “content for the site” mean? Creating words (content) for your site can feel really overwhelming, but it’s a fantastic opportunity to review your processes, what you offer, and how that’s different from others in your industry. You don’t have to be a writer – we LOVE writing engaging content, so don’t stress, we’ll clean up your words to present your brand in the best light. And we love organizing other people’s content. Taking large amounts of content and making it easily consumed by site visitors is something we thrive on. This can mean: 👉 updating content 👉 streamlining your navigation 👉 setting up re-directs (important!) 👉 condensing material 👉 revamping to make a smooth user friendly experience 👉 providing a hosting and maintenance plan so you have a consistent go-to person who looks after all the functionality of the site, rather than a million different providers for different services 👉 cleaning up old accounts (might even save you some money!) What’s with privacy policies and cookies? We are committed to building websites with privacy best practices in mind. Sometimes tools that collect data are necessary for a business. This isn’t a bad thing, but it’s crucial to always get consent before collecting/storing people’s data. We offer [auto-updating privacy policies](https://unlimitedbs.ca/website-privacy-policies/) through Termageddon to keep your site (and your visitors!) safe. Can you get me as the top search result on Google? When clients say, “I want to be at the top of Google search results,” it’s important to know that Google customizes results based on each user’s location, search history, and online habits. So, even if your site ranks highly, it may show up differently for each person. Achieving visibility involves not just aiming for top rankings but also creating quality content and optimizing for local audiences to reach more people consistently. Couldn’t I just use a do-it-yourself builder for cheaper? Yup! Just let us put this bug in your ear. Your website is, or should be, more than just aesthetically pleasing. You may think, well looking great gets them through the door and that’s all I care about.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But does it get them through the door? 🚪⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Can they even find your door? 🗺⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ✔ Site speed⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ✔ Sitemaps⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ✔ Meta-tags⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ✔ SEO optimization⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ✔ SSL certificates⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ These aren’t just words to blow smoke, they affect the integrity of your site and the user experience. A great designer knows that, an implements all those things you don’t see on the outward facing site. ### Tools to help yourself Get a free Business Profile on Google If you have a business, people are more than likely searching on Google or using Google Maps to find you. We use the latest version GA4 and set up the tracking with the basics. Here’s a great overview on what it collects, and how to understand your results. [The Ultimate Guide to GA4 in WordPress for Beginners](https://www.wpbeginner.com/beginners-guide/ultimate-guide-to-ga4-in-wordpress-for-beginners/) Understanding responsive websites We get this question a lot. Can you make that line of text go on the next line? Whether or not a word or words appear on one line will be dependent on screen size, meaning on a regular laptop screen it will appear on one line, a tablet, maybe still one line, but a bit smaller text, and then a cell phone it for sure will move to 2 lines. We want that because decreasing the font size to have it to one line on a mobile would make it too small and illegible. That’s also why we don’t use forced line breaks – on different screens, it will break at different points so if we force a break it will look way off on different screen sizes. Canva – a design tool for all levels We recommend this ALL THE TIME. Need a social media share image, maybe with some text overlay, or something a little more creative than you can pull off? Canva is your answer. So many templates to choose from and if you get the paid version, your options open up. You can resize your same design for different social media channels, set up your brand’s fonts and colours, and more. Honest, practical insight into your WordPress site so you can move forward confidently. ## When your website needs help, not a sales pitch. If you have a WordPress site that feels stuck, confusing to work with, or overdue for an overhaul, you’re not alone. Many people inherit sites they didn’t build, can’t reach their original provider, or aren’t sure what’s safe to touch. This service is designed to give you clarity, direction, and practical help without pressure to rebuild or commit to something bigger before you’re ready. ![](https://unlimitedbs.ca/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Task-Blocks.png) ### Better decisions start with clarity. ## How it works **WordPress Site Audit** is a focused, paid discovery where I look at your existing WordPress website and help you understand what’s going on. We look at accessibility, SEO, loading/performance issues, user experience improvements, site security, content review and anything else we spot that needs attention, or maybe doesn’t! We start with what you already have. I review the site, look at how it’s set up, and identify what’s working, what’s causing problems, and what might become an issue later. You’ll get clear explanations in plain language, along with realistic options for what to do next. Sometimes the answer is a fix. Sometimes it’s a move. Sometimes it’s a clean-up, content help, or a rebuild. The difference is that the decision is based on understanding, not urgency. ### What’s Included This engagement focuses on clarity and problem-solving. It includes: A review and evaluation of your existing WordPress website, its performance, user experience, SEO, accessibility, and more. A look at hosting, domain, and access setup. Identification of issues and risks. Clear explanation of what’s going on. Practical recommendations for next steps. If small fixes make sense during the review, I’ll let you know. Larger or follow-up work is always discussed separately. - ### What this is not To keep expectations clear, this service does not include: Full website redesigns Ongoing support or maintenance Unlimited fixes Emergency response Those may come later, if needed, but this step is about understanding first. ## What to expect Once the review is complete, you’ll have clear recommendations and options. From there, one of several things usually happens: I help fix the identified issue(s). - I help move hosting or a domain. - I assist with content updates or cleanup. - I recommend not changing anything yet if it’s safer to leave things alone. - I recommend a rebuild, with clear reasoning. Any follow-up work is optional, clearly scoped, and quoted separately. There’s no pressure to continue if this step gives you what you need. ## Ready for Clarity? If your WordPress site feels stuck, slow, or hard to work with and you want clear answers before making any big decisions, this is the right place to start. ### WordPress Site Audit ### $350 A focused, paid audit to review your existing WordPress site, explain what’s going on, and outline clear next steps. This audit is designed to provide clarity and direction, even if no further work follows. ### Request a WordPress Audit Share a bit about what’s going on with your site. I’ll review the details and follow up to confirm next steps. Once you submit this form, I’ll review the details and follow up by email. This is not emergency support, and nothing will be charged until next steps are confirmed. ## Frequently Asked Questions ### Is this emergency support? No. This service is designed for review, clarity, and problem-solving, not urgent or same-day fixes. If your site is down or compromised, this may not be the right starting point. ### Will you fix things during the review? The focus is on understanding what’s going on and outlining the best next steps. Small fixes may be identified along the way, but this engagement does not include full repairs. ### Do I need to have everything figured out before contacting you? No. It’s completely okay if you’re unsure about access, hosting, or who set things up. Part of this review is helping you make sense of that. ### Will you always recommend a rebuild? No. Sometimes a rebuild makes sense, sometimes it doesn’t. The goal of this review is to understand your situation before making that call. ### Am I required to continue working with you after the review? No. Follow-up work is optional and quoted separately. Many people use this service simply to get clarity and direction. ## Better decisions start with clarity. [Get Started](#privacy-policy-options) ## FAQs Does my website really need a Privacy Policy? Since you are collecting personal information (e.g. name and email on your contact form), you are required to have a Privacy Policy. Currently, the following laws require Privacy Policies for most websites: General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR); UK Data Protection Act 2018; California Online Privacy and Protection Act of 2003 (CalOPPA); California Privacy Protection Act (CCPA); Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA); Delaware Online Privacy and Protection Act (DOPPA); Nevada Revised Statutes Chapter 603A; There are also about a dozen other states that are proposing their own privacy laws that would require most businesses to have a Privacy Policy and would affect how that Privacy Policy is written, requiring you to make changes on a pretty regular basis. We’ve partnered with Termageddon because we think it’s the best service to be protected from lawsuits and fines considering that you need a Privacy Policy. Why do I need a Terms of Service? Terms of Service is a great way to answer frequently asked customer questions and protect yourself from liability. Terms of Service provides the following: If you sell products and services, it provides information on refunds, order cancellations and returns. This will help answer customer questions and will take them further down the path to actually buying; It will protect your intellectual property by making sure that everyone who goes onto your website knows that your logo, name, etc. are yours; and If you have links to third party sites on your website (e.g. social media links), it will help protect you in case the user gets a virus from that third party website Do I need a Disclaimer? You need a Disclaimer if you do any of the following on your website: Display advertisements; Display or sell health products (e.g. vitamins and supplements); Participate in affiliate programs (e.g. Amazon Affiliates); Provide health and fitness advice or tips; or Provide any information or tips that could be seen as legal advice. If you do any of the above, the Disclaimer will help you provide required disclosures, participate in affiliate programs (some programs require you to have a Disclaimer to participate) and will reduce your liability in case something goes wrong. Can I write these policies myself? While technically you could write these policies yourself, we do not recommend that you do so. There are a lot of laws, cases and legal opinions on how to write these policies correctly. If you have not spent years studying law and cases, it is very likely that the policy you write would be incomplete, incorrect and non-compliant. Also, there are currently a lot of new privacy laws that are being proposed and passed, meaning that you’d have to constantly stay up to date with these laws and amend your Privacy Policy yourself every time. This would take a lot of time and effort on your part and would take you away from your actual business. That’s why we recommend Termageddon – they take care of all of this for you and automatically update your policies so that you do not have to worry about it. Can I ask my attorney to write these policies for me? If you have a privacy attorney, you should definitely ask him or her to write this up for you. If you want to ask your outside attorney to draft these for you, that’s a great idea but it may be a bit pricey. Also, lawyers that do not work in the privacy field often use Termageddon as the solution for their Privacy Policies so that’s something to think about as well. Is my business too small for anyone to care about this? Some of the laws that are being proposed or passed do not limit enforcement and liability to large companies only so your small business could be liable as well. Also, consumers do not distinguish between small and large businesses when it comes to protecting their privacy and are less likely to buy from companies that do not respect their privacy. Why is the Termageddon service a recurring fee? Termageddon charges a yearly fee for its service because it automatically updates your policies whenever the law changes. Over the last year, two new privacy laws went into effect in the US – California and Nevada and we have seen some changes in the United Kingdom as well. Also, there are about a dozen other states that are proposing new privacy laws as well. Termageddon charges a yearly fee because that’s a lot of research, studying and changes to your Privacy Policy that they undertake for you. Can I just copy and paste someone else’s Privacy Policy? You could try and copy and paste someone else’s Privacy Policy, rewrite it to fit your website and then paste it onto your website. However, by doing so, you’d be committing copyright infringement, which could get you sued. Also, you don’t know whether that policy is compliant with the current laws and it won’t auto-update for you, meaning that you’ll have to keep track of the changes to the law which are increasing. Having Termageddon generate a policy for you is much easier, less time consuming and safer. --- --- title: "Hosting & Maintenance" url: "https://unlimitedbs.ca/services/hosting-maintenance/" lang: "en-US" type: "page" description: "Maintaining your investment is just as valuable as creating it. Yes, I realize BS could stand for something other than Brenda Sargeant. ## The name gets a reaction, but behind it is something simple. Brenda Sargeant. The BS is me. This BS is the designer, strategist, problem solver, and voice on the other end of the phone. I started a web design company because it just seemed like the next logical step after working in civil engineering for 10 years. Self taught and far too stubborn to give up, I muddled through designing two sites, decided this was exactly what I wanted to do, and never looked back. I truly love uncovering what drives your work, hearing the story of your business, and weaving that into your website. That’s important to me, because in the age of AI, people still connect with people, and their purpose. I work with businesses and nonprofits across Central Alberta and into British Columbia who want websites that perform well, look professional, and make life easier for everyone who visits them. My focus is always the same. Make the experience simple, make it accessible, and make it something you can feel confident using long after launch. [**Let’s work together→**](https://unlimitedbs.ca/contact/) ![](https://unlimitedbs.ca/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/Owner-Brenda-Sargeant.png) ## Things that are important to me. And hopefully to you too. ### Usability Clear navigation, accessible design, solid content structure. I do not treat these as extras because I’ve seen what happens to sites that skip them. Your visitors should know exactly where to go and what to do without guessing. That is what I build for. ### Support that supports Launching a website is exciting, and the technical side can get overwhelming fast. You should never feel alone with it. I offer ongoing hosting, maintenance, training, and real human support. When something changes or something breaks, you’re not explaining your setup to someone new, you’re calling the person who built your site. ### Design with purpose Your business has something real to offer. Good design helps people see it, understand it, and trust it. A strong website builds trust, supports your business, and helps people take action. ## Ready to work together? If you want a website that actually represents your business and a designer who is still reachable after launch, we will work well together. ##### Want a site that keeps working long after launch? We don’t do half assed, and won’t compromise on following best practises. ##### Are we the right fit? [Start the conversation ](https://unlimitedbs.ca/contact/) ## Built for Real People A website should create a connection the moment someone arrives. That connection comes from being clear** immediately **about who you are, what you offer, and why it matters. We design to deliver that clarity. That means we assume nothing, avoid unnecessary complexity, and make every choice with your users’ experience at the centre, whether that choice is colour, layout, content, or structure. ![](https://unlimitedbs.ca/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Website-Design-Red-Deer.png) [Check out some of our work ](https://unlimitedbs.ca/portfolio/) ### Great websites aren’t about bells and whistles. They’re about people. And we design with your users in mind from the very first step. ## Our Approach ### Our clients tell the story better than we can. Play - ### Design and Strategy Before we design anything, we take the time to understand your business, your goals, and the people you want to reach. We plan the intent of every page and outline the action each one should lead to. That means no guessing, no retrofitting, and nothing that needs to be undone later. ### Search Engine Optimization Someone once asked if we “do” SEO. The honest answer: we cannot build a website without it! Search optimization is in the structure, the headings, the page speed. By the time your site launches, it is already set up to be found. ### Accessible by Design Accessibility is built into every stage of the process. It is not optional and it is not added as an afterthought. ### Built Right on WordPress Behind the visuals is a stable, secure, optimized WordPress website. We follow best practices, and test your site across screen sizes, browsers, and devices so every visitor gets a consistent experience, no matter how they arrive. ### Thoughtful, Clear Content Your content should make life easier for your visitors. We structure information so it is simple to scan, simple to understand, and simple to act on. Visitors know what to do next without having to work for it. ## What makes us different. From the first conversation to launch and everything after, the same person handles it all. Nothing falls through the cracks, nothing gets handed off to someone who did not build it, and when you need to change something, you are calling the person who knows your site inside and out.
